On Tuesday, July 6, 2010 - the Alton Fire Dept. responded to a brush fire on Mt. Major. The fire was in extremely rugged terrain and was initially difficult to find. Tuesday's operations mostly included scouting the routes of access and size of the fire. Making things more difficult was the weather at almost 100 degrees F with high humidity. Not surprisingly, three firefighters were transported to the hospital with heat emergencies. After consultation between the incident command staff and NH MTF 1 Commander - Steve Fecteau, NH Medical Task Force 1 was requested to deploy and provide force protection for Wednesday and Thursday 7/7 and 7/8. 7-8 members were mustered for each day and with physician support NH MTF 1 treated 12 patients and provided post-operations medical screening for approximately 40 firefighters. Of the 12 patients only two were transported to local hospitals. The Alton Fire Chief was gratefull for the support. The major obstacle for the task force was cooling the treatment tent. A total of three air conditioners and additional tent insulation was needed to bring the tent to a level that was appropriate for treating patients. This deployment was an excellent use of the task force and made a huge impact on the fire operation.
